Much of my time and creative energy in recent months has been focused towards preparing for a solo exhibition of paintings. The show, titled THE COLOUR OF LIGHT opens at Kina Gallery in New Plymouth on June 7th.
Painting for me is important, not only because it provides a medium for self expression and a means for reflecting on and responding to my surrounds, but it also enables me to connect with like minded people.
Part of the exhibition is an Artist's Talk (Sunday 9th June, 1pm at Kina Gallery) and in preparing notes for this, I've been reflecting on not only what I do as a painter in the physical sense, but why I paint. My talk will cover my background, my inspiration and my process, but I'll also share how this creative engagement enables me to connect with myself and my community in a truly authentic way.
Recently I spoke with Dr Tabatha Forbes (a talented artist and part of the Kina team) about my preparation for the show. She's written this piece for the blog.
When she visited my home with Katie O'Neill to take pics and see the work in progress it felt very foreign and I remarked how odd I felt to be photographed and interviewed. But when I read the piece they've put together it does feel genuine. It feels like me. This is the same sense I get when I look at my work.
I'm excited and nervous about the show, but proud also to share my work with others. Thank you to Tabatha and Luella at Kina and also to the many other people who support me with my painting. All the feedback is appreciated. Feeling grateful for sure.
